Ghana has taken a bold step in expanding access to financial services by adding a digital wallet feature to the Ghana Card, its widely used national identification system. Developed by the National Identification Authority, the new feature allows citizens to carry out everyday financial transactions directly from their ID card, marking a significant shift in how identity and payments intersect in the country.

With the upgrade, users can now withdraw cash from ATMs, make payments in shops and online, and even carry out international transactions across more than 200 countries. Existing cardholders can activate the wallet through the MyCitizens App or by using a simple USSD code, making the system accessible even to those without smartphones. The addition also opens the door to services such as insurance and emergency support, turning the Ghana Card into a multi purpose financial tool.

The move is aimed at tackling financial exclusion, especially in a country where credit card usage remains very low. By embedding a wallet into a government issued ID, authorities hope to remove common barriers that prevent many people from accessing banking services. The initiative builds on the original vision of the Ghana Card as a three in one solution covering identity, travel, and now payments, following the earlier rollout of its e passport function.

Unlike traditional banking systems, the wallet is designed as a shared platform that can connect multiple banks rather than being controlled by a single institution. There are also plans to extend its use into broader economic activities, including possible integration with gold trading through the Ghana Gold Board. If widely adopted, the system could signal a new direction for payments in Africa, where identity based financial solutions begin to reduce reliance on global providers like Visa and Mastercard.
