TikTok has intensified its content moderation efforts in Nigeria, removing more than four million videos between October and December 2025 as the social media platform seeks to strengthen online safety, curb misinformation and enforce its community standards across one of Africa’s largest digital markets.

According to the platform’s latest Community Guidelines Enforcement Report, the vast majority of the videos were detected and removed through automated systems before they could gain significant visibility. TikTok disclosed that 99.9 per cent of the offending content was taken down before any user report was filed, while 98.4 per cent was removed within 24 hours of being posted. The report also showed that more than 86,000 live streaming sessions originating from Nigeria were interrupted during the period for violating the platform’s rules.

The company said a major focus of its enforcement strategy is addressing the growing risks associated with artificial intelligence generated content. To tackle the challenge, TikTok requires users to clearly label realistic AI generated videos, images and audio. The platform has also adopted C2PA Content Credentials technology, which embeds digital metadata into AI generated content to improve transparency and help users identify manipulated media. According to the company, the initiative has already facilitated the labelling of more than 1.3 billion videos globally.

TikTok maintained that stronger moderation measures are essential to limiting harmful content, deceptive information and the misuse of emerging technologies. The platform also highlighted its collaboration with Nigeria’s Office of the National Security Adviser and various civil society organisations on digital safety programmes. However, concerns persist over the reliability of automated moderation systems, with TikTok acknowledging that about 8.4 million videos removed globally during the period were later restored following human review, indicating that some content had been taken down in error.
