Social media platform TikTok has been described as extremely cooperative with the European Commission as investigations continue into possible interference during Romania’s 2024 presidential election. A spokesperson for the Commission said the company has shown willingness to engage constructively and respond to concerns raised by regulators.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier said TikTok had taken several steps since the probe began, noting that open engagement with regulators often leads to more effective oversight. He stressed that the Commission remains open to dialogue with digital platforms that show readiness to comply with European rules.
The investigation dates back to December 2024, when the European Union opened formal proceedings against TikTok over suspicions that it failed to adequately curb election related interference during the Romanian presidential vote. The move was part of the EU’s broader effort to enforce its digital governance framework and protect electoral processes from manipulation.
The outcome of the probe could shape how social media platforms operate during elections across Europe. As scrutiny of digital platforms intensifies, the case underscores the growing expectation that tech companies must actively safeguard democratic processes while remaining transparent and accountable to regulators.
