Enugu State has taken a decisive step toward industrial transformation with the inauguration of the 20 million dollar Enugu Haier Factory, a foreign direct investment venture designed to reposition the state from a civil service driven economy to a private sector led manufacturing hub. Governor Peter Mbah performed the commissioning, describing the project as central to the state’s ambition of expanding its economy from 4.4 billion dollars to 30 billion dollars in the coming years.

The facility is the product of a partnership between the Enugu State Government and Haier Group, one of the world’s leading electronics manufacturers. Beyond assembly operations, the investment signals a strategic effort to deepen local manufacturing capacity and reduce Nigeria’s longstanding dependence on imported technology hardware.

Designed with an annual production capacity of 200,000 units, the factory will manufacture a range of products spanning smartphones, tablets, all in one desktops, and Android televisions. It will also produce medical equipment, smart boards for schools, and renewable energy solutions targeted at agriculture and transportation, marking a diversified approach that links technology with social infrastructure and economic productivity.

To reduce investor risk and accelerate takeoff, the state government has positioned itself as an anchor off taker. It has already placed orders for 25,000 desktop computers and 300,000 tablets to equip its 260 Smart Green Schools initiative. Governor Mbah noted that local production of devices for education and key industries would lower costs, improve sustainability, and strengthen what he described as hardware sovereignty within Nigeria’s technology ecosystem.

The governor further explained that the factory would function as a practical laboratory for vocational and technical institutions in the state, enabling technology transfer and bridging the gap between classroom instruction and industrial practice. With global revenues exceeding 60 billion dollars in 2025, Haier is treating the Enugu facility as a long term base. The current investment represents phase one, with projected capital expected to exceed 30 million dollars as operations expand into additional sectors including mining tools, agricultural equipment, and tricycles.

Sun Yongle, Vice President of Haier Group, said the company’s vision is to progress from products assembled in Enugu to products designed in Enugu, revealing plans to establish a local research and development centre alongside a training hub that will offer internship opportunities to students.

The commissioning also carried policy significance. Governor Mbah commended President Bola Tinubu for macroeconomic reforms which he said had strengthened investor confidence through improved foreign reserves and currency stability. The Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr Kingsley Udeh, described the Enugu project as a strategic contribution to the Federal Government’s aspiration of building a one trillion dollar national economy, positioning the factory as both a state driven initiative and a building block in Nigeria’s broader industrial renaissance.
