Nigeria is set to introduce the Single Travel Emergency Passport in January 2026, a digital solution designed to assist citizens abroad who lose their passports. Announced by Minister of Interior Dr. Olubunmi Tunji Ojo during the launch of the ECOWAS Biometric ID Card in Abuja, the new system allows Nigerians to generate emergency travel documents from mobile devices, removing the need to visit an embassy in person and reducing long-standing bureaucratic delays.
The initiative reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to efficient, people-centered immigration services. The Single Travel Emergency Passport will replace the old Emergency Travel Certificate and will be issued at designated Nigerian embassies and consulates for single-entry use. It complements the rollout of the ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card, enhancing secure and seamless travel within West Africa.
Under Dr. Tunji Ojo’s leadership, the Ministry of Interior has achieved significant reforms, including clearing massive passport backlogs that had frustrated thousands of Nigerians. Technological upgrades, improved workflows, and better coordination with passport offices nationwide have restored transparency and order to the system, making passport issuance faster and more predictable for citizens.
The improvements extend to Nigerians living abroad, who now benefit from more responsive passport services at embassies and consulates. Comptroller General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap, has played a key role in implementing these reforms through modern technology and disciplined operations. Together, their leadership marks a milestone in Nigeria’s push toward a fully digitized identity and migration management system, signaling greater efficiency and renewed public trust.
