TikTok has demonstrated its firm commitment to digital safety in Nigeria by removing over 3.6 million videos from the platform between January and March 2025 for violations of its Community Guidelines.
This figure marks a 50% increase in enforcement compared to the previous quarter and is highlighted in TikTok’s Q1 2025 Community Guidelines Enforcement Report. The removals reflect proactive moderation efforts, including the use of AI tools and a dedicated safety team, as well as growing partnerships with local Nigerian organizations.
Key enforcement metrics specific to Nigeria show that 4% of the removed videos were taken down before being reported, while 1% were removed within 24 hours of upload. Additionally, TikTok banned over 42,000 LIVE rooms and interrupted more than 48,000 livestreams due to guideline violations.
These actions coincide with TikTok’s global removal of more than 211 million videos in the same period, with over 184 million taken down through automated systems. The platform’s proactive detection rate now stands at 99%.
In West Africa, TikTok removed 129 covert accounts in March as part of efforts to counter coordinated harmful behavior. The platform is also tightening monetization policies for LIVE content and enforcing clearer content guidelines to ensure safety during real-time engagement.
Despite the crackdown, TikTok emphasized that the majority of Nigerian content remains positive and enriching, highlighting the importance of maintaining a safe space for creative expression.
