Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has announced its plans to establish a dedicated team aimed at addressing disinformation and the misuse of generative artificial intelligence in the lead-up to the forthcoming European Parliament elections scheduled for June. This move comes amidst growing concerns surrounding election interference and the dissemination of misleading AI-generated content.

The proliferation of generative AI technology, capable of rapidly generating text, images, and videos in response to prompts, has raised alarm bells regarding its potential exploitation to disrupt pivotal elections worldwide this year.

Scheduled from June 6 to 9, the European Parliament elections hold significant importance as its 720 lawmakers, in conjunction with EU governments, formulate and enact new policies and legislation.

Marco Pancini, Meta’s head of EU affairs, outlined the company’s proactive measures in a recent blog post, stating, “As the election approaches, we’ll activate an Elections Operations Center to identify potential threats and implement real-time mitigations.”

Pancini emphasized that Meta’s multidisciplinary team comprising experts from intelligence, data science, engineering, research, operations, content policy, and legal domains will concentrate on combating misinformation, addressing influence operations, and mitigating risks associated with the misuse of generative AI technology.

Furthermore, Pancini revealed Meta’s intention to expand its collaboration with fact-checking organizations across the European Union. Currently partnering with 26 independent fact-checking entities covering 22 languages, Meta plans to onboard three additional partners in Bulgaria, France, and Slovakia.

In a concerted effort to safeguard the integrity of elections worldwide, Meta, along with Microsoft, OpenAI, and 17 other tech firms, recently entered into an agreement to collaborate in preventing deceptive artificial intelligence content from undermining electoral processes globally throughout the year.
