MTN Nigeria’s fintech business recorded a 25.9 per cent decline in revenue despite significant growth in its mobile money operations, highlighting the challenges of converting increased digital payment adoption into stronger financial returns. The development presents a mixed picture for the telecommunications company’s fintech ambitions, as its MoMo platform continues to expand amid changing market conditions.

According to the company’s reported nine month performance for 2026, MoMo recorded 102 per cent growth, suggesting increasing adoption of its digital financial services. However, the growth has not translated into corresponding revenue gains across the wider fintech division, raising questions about transaction monetisation, operating costs and the sustainability of its business model.

The contrasting performance reflects the competitive pressures facing Nigeria’s digital financial services industry, where mobile money operators, commercial banks and fintech startups are competing for customers through payment services, transfers and other digital financial products. While increased user adoption remains important, providers must also develop sustainable revenue streams to support infrastructure investment and business expansion.

For Nigeria’s fintech ecosystem, MTN’s performance highlights the distinction between expanding digital payment usage and achieving profitability. As more Nigerians embrace electronic transactions, fintech operators will need to strengthen customer retention, improve service efficiency and diversify their revenue sources to turn growing digital adoption into sustainable business growth.
