The Sahara Group Foundation has commissioned its 18th and 19th Sahara Go Recycling Hubs in Ojodu Local Council Development Area of Lagos as part of efforts to expand access to sustainable waste management solutions in underserved communities.

The Foundation, which serves as the social impact arm of Sahara Group, said the initiative is aimed at promoting responsible waste disposal, improving recycling culture, and creating income opportunities for residents through structured waste to wealth programmes.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Director of Sahara Group Foundation, Chidilim Menakaya, described the project as part of the organisation’s commitment to building sustainable communities through practical and inclusive environmental solutions. She explained that the recycling hubs would not only reduce the volume of recyclable waste ending up in landfills but also empower households economically through recycling activities and community based enterprise opportunities. According to her, the initiative reflects how innovation and collaboration can strengthen livelihoods while promoting environmental sustainability.

The development also highlights the growing role of technology and structured environmental systems in Nigeria’s waste management sector. Analysts say organised recycling initiatives supported by data driven collection systems, logistics coordination, and community engagement are gradually transforming waste management into an emerging green economy opportunity in the country. The Foundation disclosed that since the launch of the Sahara Go Recycling Initiative, more than 1000 tonnes of recyclable materials have been processed while over 2000 livelihoods have been directly and indirectly impacted through collection, sorting, logistics, and related activities.

Representing the Executive Chairman of Ojodu LCDA, David Olusegun Odunmbaku, the Chief of Staff, Olaide Bello, commended the Foundation for supporting environmental sustainability and community development. He noted that the recycling hubs align with the council’s vision of reducing environmental challenges while creating economic opportunities for residents. Sahara Group Foundation added that it plans to continue expanding the Sahara Go Recycling Initiative across Lagos and other communities as part of its broader mission to promote sustainable lifestyles and community resilience through EXTRApreneurship.
