ABUJA , The House of Representatives has summoned the chief executive officers of major telecommunications operators, including MTN Nigeria, Airtel, Globacom and 9mobile, over persistent complaints of poor network quality and declining service delivery across the country. Lawmakers expressed concern over increasing reports of dropped calls, slow internet connectivity and service disruptions despite recent adjustments in tariffs and continuous subscriber growth.

The lawmakers, who described the situation as unacceptable, said millions of Nigerians depend on telecom services for business, education, financial transactions and daily communication. Members noted that complaints from constituents have risen significantly in recent months, with consumers questioning the value received from services provided by operators. The House warned that poor service quality could undermine confidence in the country’s digital economy ambitions.

During deliberations, the legislators directed the affected telecom firms to appear before the relevant committee to explain the causes of the persistent network challenges and outline measures being taken to improve service delivery. The House also indicated that failure to honour the invitation or provide satisfactory explanations could attract regulatory and legislative sanctions.

The development adds to growing scrutiny of the telecommunications sector, one of the key drivers of Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda. Industry stakeholders are expected to closely watch the outcome of the engagement between lawmakers and telecom operators as authorities seek to balance consumer protection with continued investment in network infrastructure and service expansion.
