Nigeria has launched a new 11 character digital postcode system designed to provide precise digital identification for individual buildings and locations across the country. The initiative, introduced by the Nigerian Postal Service, NIPOST, is expected to strengthen addressing infrastructure and support the growth of Nigeria’s digital economy.

Unlike the existing six digit postcode system, the new alphanumeric system is designed to identify specific addressable locations rather than broad geographical areas. The development is expected to improve location based services, particularly in areas such as e commerce, logistics, emergency response, financial technology and digital identity verification.

The digital postcode system could also help businesses and technology companies address some of the challenges associated with inaccurate or incomplete physical addresses. By providing a standardised digital location reference, online retailers, delivery companies, financial institutions and other digital service providers could achieve greater accuracy in delivering services to customers.

The initiative comes as Nigeria continues to expand its digital infrastructure and integrate technology into everyday economic activities. Its successful adoption could provide a more reliable foundation for digital commerce and location based services, while helping businesses and public institutions connect physical addresses with Nigeria’s growing digital ecosystem.
