Nigeria’s technology startup ecosystem is attracting increased interest from Canadian investors and businesses, with both countries exploring opportunities for stronger collaboration in technology, artificial intelligence, financial services, clean technology and education. The development highlights Nigeria’s growing importance as a destination for international technology investment and partnerships.

Discussions between Nigerian and Canadian stakeholders have focused on expanding private sector cooperation and creating opportunities for Canadian companies to engage with Nigeria’s fast growing innovation ecosystem. Nigeria’s startup sector has continued to attract international attention because of its large consumer market, growing pool of technology talent and expanding activity across fintech, healthtech, agritech and other emerging sectors. Nigeria’s official Startup Portal also identifies foreign investment as an important component of the country’s strategy for developing technology enabled businesses.

The growing international interest comes as Nigeria continues to strengthen its startup and artificial intelligence ecosystem. Data from the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics indicates that the country’s active AI startup ecosystem has grown 3.4 times, with more than 120 startups operating across areas including healthcare, education, agriculture, business, media and language technology.

The renewed Canadian interest could provide Nigerian startups with opportunities for investment, technology transfer, market access and talent development. However, stakeholders have continued to emphasise the need to address challenges including access to growth capital, technical talent and an enabling policy environment if Nigeria is to convert international interest into sustainable startup growth and stronger economic impact.
