The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) has engaged 60 young Nigerians in a national innovation hackathon aimed at developing solutions to challenges in education, security and food security. The initiative, known as FutureMakers, is designed to help children aged five to 16 develop practical technology and problem solving skills.

The FutureMakers Zonal Hackathon, which began on Monday, August 17, 2026, will run virtually until August 21, with participants drawn from Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. The young innovators are receiving support from technical facilitators and mentors as they develop and test their ideas from their homes.

According to the Hub Manager, NASENI Innovation Hub, Busola Perez Folayan, the 60 ideas submitted by participants will be transformed from concepts into practical solutions during the hackathon and design thinking boot camp. The innovations include an AI powered learning platform, an emergency alert device and a platform designed to improve access to nutritious food.

The programme is being implemented with academic and ecosystem partners, including MIVA Open University and the African University of Science and Technology, Abuja. NASENI said the initiative reflects its mandate to promote indigenous technology development, engineering capacity, research and innovation as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s innovation ecosystem.
