Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, is set to deepen the use of emerging technologies in higher education through a proposed partnership with Chinese technology company KMAX to establish a Virtual Reality Multi Disciplinary Simulation Laboratory (VR MDSL) for practical teaching and learning.

The initiative was discussed during a meeting between an ABU delegation led by Vice Chancellor, Adamu Ahmed, and KMAX officials in China. The proposed facility will leverage artificial intelligence and virtual reality technologies to provide students across multiple disciplines with hands on training through a shared digital platform, helping to overcome challenges associated with inadequate laboratories, limited equipment and expensive field based learning.

Speaking during the engagement, Ahmed said the university faces increasing pressure to provide quality practical training for its growing student population, noting that upgrading conventional laboratories requires significant financial investment. He expressed optimism that AI and VR driven learning solutions would expand access to practical education while reducing operational costs.

KMAX welcomed the proposal and pledged to strengthen its collaboration with the institution. The company is offering 150 virtual reality software licences covering areas such as industrial robotics, automotive technology and anatomy. Its Vice President, August Cui, described the project as a strong foundation for a deeper partnership, with stakeholders expressing confidence that the facility could become one of ABU’s most significant investments in technology enabled education.
