Students and teachers at Iwerekun Junior Secondary School, Lakowe, Lagos, are celebrating improved access to digital learning tools following the renovation of the school’s ICT laboratory under the What Can We Do Together initiative of MTN Foundation. The school, which has a student population of over 2,000, including more than 400 technical students, had struggled with inadequate digital learning facilities before the intervention.
The upgraded ICT laboratory has since transformed learning activities within the school, creating a more engaging and practical environment for students. According to the school’s Principal, Mr. Azeez Olatunji Fatai, students now have access to digital tools and learning resources that were previously unavailable, adding that their confidence in the use of technology has improved significantly since the installation of the facility.
The impact is also beginning to reflect in students’ performance and participation in extracurricular activities. The school recently emerged winner in an inter school competition, a development many within the school community attributed to increased exposure and improved learning opportunities. Teachers also noted that students now show greater enthusiasm during lessons and participate more actively in practical and skill based programmes.
The Foundation said the intervention aligns with its commitment to addressing gaps in education and community infrastructure across the country. It added that nominations have opened for Phase 6 of the initiative, with schools and communities encouraged to apply for opportunities to benefit from upgraded science laboratories and primary healthcare centres aimed at expanding access to quality education and development opportunities nationwide.
