OpenAI on Friday announced that its flagship chatbot, ChatGPT, has reached 900 million weekly active users, bringing the platform within reach of the 1 billion mark. The company also disclosed that it now has 50 million paying subscribers, underscoring rapid commercial adoption of its artificial intelligence tools across consumer and enterprise markets.

In a blog post, OpenAI said subscriber momentum accelerated sharply at the start of the year, with January and February on track to become the largest months for new subscribers in its history. The company attributed the growth to expanding use cases, noting that people rely on ChatGPT to learn, write, plan, and build. It added that as usage scales, improvements in speed, reliability, safety, and overall performance have become more noticeable to users.

The new weekly active user figure represents a jump of 100 million from the 800 million users the company reported in October 2025. The steady rise reflects sustained global demand for generative artificial intelligence tools, even as competition intensifies and regulatory scrutiny increases in key markets.

OpenAI disclosed the updated user metrics alongside news that it has raised 110 billion dollars in private funding, one of the largest fundraising rounds in history. The round includes a 50 billion dollar investment from Amazon, as well as 30 billion dollars each from Nvidia and SoftBank. The funding values the company at a 730 billion dollar pre money valuation, according to the announcement.

The round remains open, with OpenAI expecting additional investors to participate. The scale of the capital raise highlights growing investor confidence in artificial intelligence infrastructure and applications, as firms race to secure computing power, talent, and market share in what has become one of the fastest expanding segments of the global technology industry.
