The Wikimedia Foundation has marked its 25th anniversary with the announcement of a broad set of new partnerships with major artificial intelligence companies, reinforcing Wikipedia’s growing role in the global AI ecosystem. The partnerships are tied to Wikimedia Enterprise, the foundation’s commercial product designed to support large scale reuse and distribution of Wikipedia content and materials from other Wikimedia projects.
Beyond its earlier disclosed partnership with Google in 2022, the foundation revealed for the first time that it has entered agreements over the past year with Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Mistral AI, and Perplexity. It also confirmed additional collaborations with Ecosia, Pleias, ProRata, Nomic, and Reef Media. Together, these deals formalize how some of the world’s largest technology firms access and use Wikimedia content as they build AI driven products and services.
The foundation explained that these arrangements offer a sustainable pathway at a time when Wikipedia’s content is increasingly scraped and reused by AI models to generate instant factual responses. Wikimedia Enterprise not only ensures compensation for high volume usage, but also provides structured access to data at the speed and scale required by enterprise customers, helping to reduce strain on Wikipedia’s public infrastructure.
In a related blog post, the organization highlighted Wikipedia’s global reach, noting that it remains among the ten most visited websites in the world. Users collectively view more than 65 million articles across over 300 languages, generating close to 15 billion page views every month. According to the foundation, this scale underscores the continued relevance of human curated knowledge even as automated systems become more prominent.
Alongside the partnership announcements, Wikimedia launched a 25th birthday campaign featuring a video docuseries spotlighting volunteers, a digital time capsule tracing Wikipedia’s evolution, and a livestreamed anniversary event scheduled for January 15. The foundation also pointed to recent progress in its technical infrastructure, its own responsible approach to AI, and experiments with new formats such as games and short form video, signaling its intent to remain adaptive and community centered in the years ahead.
