Apple has launched an upgraded MacBook Air powered by the new M4 chip, offering improved performance, longer battery life, and a refreshed design. The latest model boasts up to 18 hours of battery life and introduces a new sky blue colour option. The 13-inch version now starts at $999, marking a $100 price reduction, while students can purchase it for $899. Pre-orders for the device have begun, with official availability set for March 12.
The M4 chip brings a significant performance boost, making tasks like multitasking, photo editing, and video rendering faster. Apple claims the new MacBook Air is up to twice as fast as the M1 version and significantly outperforms Intel-based models. It features a 10-core CPU, a 10-core GPU, and an upgraded Neural Engine that speeds up AI-powered tasks such as background noise removal and automatic photo enhancements. Apple’s latest macOS Sequoia further enhances productivity with new features like iPhone Mirroring and an improved Safari experience.
Design improvements include support for two external 6K displays, a feature absent in previous models. The ultra-thin aluminium build remains intact, with the Liquid Retina display providing sharp details, vibrant colours, and up to 500 nits of brightness. The MacBook Air also debuts a 12MP Center Stage camera, which automatically adjusts framing during video calls. Additionally, Apple has upgraded the audio experience with a three-microphone array and Spatial Audio support for an immersive sound experience.
The new laptop aligns with Apple’s sustainability goals, incorporating over 55% recycled materials. The enclosure is made from 100% recycled aluminium, while the battery uses fully recycled cobalt. Apple has also transitioned to fibre-based packaging as part of its efforts to eliminate plastic waste by 2025. The company aims to achieve complete carbon neutrality across its supply chain by 2030.
The MacBook Air is available in two sizes: the 13-inch model for $999 ($899 for students) and the 15-inch version for $1,199 ($1,099 for students). With its lightweight design, powerful performance, and affordability, Apple targets students, professionals, and creatives looking for a portable yet high-performance laptop.
