In a major step towards modernizing government services, South Africa’s Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber has announced plans to digitize the department’s operations. This initiative aims to eliminate the need for in-person visits by transforming current paper-based processes into an advanced automated platform.

The new digital system will enable South Africans to apply for IDs, renew passports, and request visas online. By utilizing cutting-edge facial and fingerprint recognition technology, similar to that found in smartphones, the system promises to verify applicants’ identities swiftly and securely. The online portal will handle everything from document verification and fraud checks to processing cashless transactions and delivering results in seconds.

Minister Schreiber highlighted that the move is intended to address long-standing issues such as lengthy wait times, lost paperwork, and corruption within the department. Furthermore, the digital shift will allow Home Affairs staff to concentrate on assisting vulnerable populations, including those in rural areas and individuals with urgent or complex cases.

However, Schreiber acknowledged past challenges with system reliability and internet infrastructure, noting the need to resolve these issues to ensure the success of the digital transformation. Despite a significant network upgrade in 2022, the department has experienced continued service disruptions.

The new system also aims to extend its services to South Africans living abroad, with the potential for delivering IDs and passports directly to their homes, similar to how credit cards are dispatched by banks. This ambitious overhaul seeks to bring much-needed improvements to South Africa’s Home Affairs and enhance the overall efficiency of government services.
