In a testament to the pivotal role China plays in its global supply chain, Apple’s (AAPL.O) Chief Executive Officer, Tim Cook, lauded the nation’s significance as he engaged with suppliers including BYD Electronics (0285.HK) during his visit on Wednesday, as reported by local media.
Taking to his Weibo social media account, Cook shared snippets of his exploration along Shanghai’s iconic Bund river, accompanied by Chinese actor Zheng Kai, alongside relishing a traditional local breakfast. While withholding specifics regarding the remainder of his itinerary for this visit, Cook’s presence signifies Apple’s enduring commitment to its Chinese stakeholders.
According to the China Daily, Cook emphasized in an interview the unparalleled importance of China’s supply chain to Apple, affirming, “there’s no supply chain in the world that’s more critical to us than China.”

During his rendezvous, Cook engaged in discussions with Wang Chuanfu, the founder and president of Apple supplier BYD Electronics, along with key representatives from Lens Technology (300433.SZ) at the company’s Shanghai premises, as reported by the China Daily.
Cook’s visit coincides with Apple’s announcement of the inauguration of a new retail outlet in the heart of Shanghai, scheduled for Thursday. This visit comes at a crucial juncture as Apple grapples with dwindling iPhone sales in China and escalating competition from domestic contenders such as Huawei (HWT.UL).
Notably, Cook’s trip marks his frequent engagement with China, Apple’s third-largest revenue-generating market, evidenced by at least two visits made last year. In a similar vein, he journeyed to Beijing around the same timeframe last year, where he patronized an Apple store and partook in the China Development Forum, underlining Apple’s enduring investment in the region’s dynamic market landscape.
