Apple has been given a leeway to partake in developing China’s digital economy, according to Chinese state radio.

The agreement was reportedly reached at a strategic meeting between China’s Vice Premier, Ding Xuexiang, with Apple CEO, Tim Cook during a surprise visit to Beijing, less than a month after the company launched the iPhone 15 in the Oriental country.

Sources at the meeting said Xuexiang told Cook that China was willing to provide more opportunities for foreign-funded enterprises including Apple to develop in the country.

Cook said Apple was confident in the prospects of Chinese market, and was willing to strengthen cooperation with China in fields including high-end manufacturing and digital economy.

China in SeptemberĀ has tightened restrictions on the use of iPhones by state employees, telling staff at some central government agencies to stop using their Apple handsets at work citing security issues as the major concerns.

Cook’s visit comes as the competition between the U.S. tech giant and China’s Huawei heats up in Apple’s third-largest market, as research showed that the sales of iPhone 15 models in their first 17 days in China were down 4.5% compared to the iPhone 14.
