Widening access to its AI-powered technology, Microsoft has slashed the prices of its Copilot+ PCs, introducing two new Surface models aimed at students, young professionals, and users seeking affordable devices. The new Surface Laptop (13-inch) and Surface Pro (12-inch), priced at $899 and $799 respectively, will be available from May 20.
These models feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Plus processor and are specifically designed to handle Microsoft’s Copilot+ capabilities, such as generating documents from simple prompts and altering system settings without the need for an internet connection.
By incorporating AI functions that run directly on the device, Microsoft promises faster response times and enhanced privacy while reducing reliance on cloud-based services. The latest devices mark a departure from the higher price tags associated with AI-ready laptops, which typically exceeded $1,000. In addition to the lower prices, Microsoft has also slightly reduced screen sizes compared to last year’s versions.
The Surface Laptop now sports a 13-inch display, while the Surface Pro comes with a 12-inch screen. Both machines offer improved battery life, with the Surface Laptop boasting up to 16 hours of web browsing—three hours more than its predecessor.
Despite these upgrades and competitive pricing, market reception remains uncertain. Raymond James analyst, Andrew Marok, noted that demand for AI-integrated PCs is still limited, attributing it to ambiguity around their value and the evolving nature of AI tools and use cases. Nevertheless, Microsoft remains optimistic, leveraging the October deadline for Windows 10 support to encourage upgrades. While Surface devices don’t dominate the market, they continue to serve as flagship examples of Microsoft’s software and hardware integration.
The new Surface models retain Microsoft’s signature minimalist design with slim bezels, sleek form, and detachable keyboards. Enhanced features include Wi-Fi 7, better cameras and microphones, and support for two 4K external displays. A dedicated Copilot key offers quick access to AI tools, while new functionalities like “Recall” and “Click to Do” are set to enhance user experience by helping users track past activities and receive actionable content suggestions. Preorders have commenced, and buyers can choose from platinum, ocean, and violet colour variants.
