Following the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, Syrian civil defense teams, known as the White Helmets, have begun urgent searches at Saydnaya Military Prison near Damascus.

The prison, notorious for alleged torture and extrajudicial killings under Assad’s rule, is believed to contain hidden underground cells where inmates may still be trapped. Despite claims by rebels that over 3,500 prisoners have been freed, the White Helmets have yet to uncover any of the secret compartments described by former detainees.

Investigations rely heavily on testimonies from survivors, as no official floor plans exist. Rescue teams, joined by families desperate for news, are methodically searching rubble and inspecting possible underground chambers.

The fall of Assad’s regime, toppled by rebel forces led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), has sparked a mix of celebration and uncertainty. Assad fled to Russia, where he has been granted asylum. While many Syrians express hope for a new era, the search for the disappeared remains urgent, underscoring the lingering trauma of decades of oppressive rule.
