Nigeria risks losing significant economic opportunities in the artificial intelligence market if local investment, infrastructure and innovation are not strengthened to support homegrown technology businesses.

The concern highlights the growing dependence on foreign AI platforms at a time when the technology is transforming businesses, education, healthcare and other sectors. While Nigerian individuals and organisations are increasingly adopting AI tools, limited investment in local research, computing infrastructure and product development could leave the country dependent on solutions developed elsewhere.

For Nigerian startups and technology entrepreneurs, the situation presents both a challenge and an opportunity. Increased funding, stronger partnerships between government and the private sector, and support for local developers could encourage the creation of AI solutions that address Nigeria’s specific needs. Such investment could also create jobs, improve productivity and help local businesses compete in the expanding digital economy.

Nigeria’s ability to benefit from the AI revolution will therefore depend not only on how quickly its citizens adopt the technology, but also on its capacity to develop, own and commercialise homegrown innovations. Without deliberate investment and supportive policies, the country risks remaining primarily a consumer of foreign AI products rather than becoming a competitive player in the global AI market.
