The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has launched an Internet Governance Working Group to strengthen online safety, promote responsible artificial intelligence use and address emerging challenges in Nigeria’s digital space.

The initiative is expected to encourage collaboration among stakeholders on issues including data privacy, cybersecurity, digital rights and the accountability of AI systems. It also seeks to support efforts to protect internet users, particularly vulnerable groups, from online threats and the misuse of digital technologies.

The move comes as artificial intelligence and digital platforms become increasingly integrated into everyday activities, from news production and financial transactions to education and business operations. While these technologies offer significant opportunities, concerns over misinformation, data exploitation, online fraud and the potential misuse of AI tools have increased the need for effective oversight and public awareness.

For Nigeria’s growing technology ecosystem, the working group presents an opportunity to strengthen trust in digital services while encouraging responsible innovation. However, its impact will depend on effective coordination, clear policy recommendations and practical measures to protect users without unnecessarily restricting technological development. Sustained engagement with technology companies, civil society and other stakeholders will be essential to achieving these objectives.
