The Federal Government has launched a Skills to Jobs programme under the Investment in Digital and Creative Enterprises, iDICE, initiative, targeting about 300,000 young Nigerians with technology and digital economy skills. The programme is designed to strengthen the connection between digital training and actual employment opportunities for young people.
The initiative seeks to provide participants with practical skills that can improve their employability and participation in Nigeria’s growing technology and creative sectors. It is expected to focus on areas of the digital economy where there is growing demand for skilled workers, while creating pathways through which trained youths can connect with potential employers and opportunities.
The programme also reflects the increasing emphasis on moving beyond conventional skills acquisition towards training that is linked directly to jobs and economic opportunities. Stakeholders in the technology sector have consistently identified skills development as critical to enabling Nigerian youths to take advantage of the expanding digital economy.
With a target of 300,000 beneficiaries, the initiative could expand the pool of digitally skilled workers available to Nigerian businesses and technology companies. Its success will depend largely on the quality of training, access to appropriate digital infrastructure and the ability to establish sustainable links between participants, employers, startups and other players in the technology ecosystem.
