MTN Nigeria has launched FlyX, a fixed broadband service designed to extend high speed internet access to homes and small businesses in areas where fibre connectivity is not yet available. The new service uses MTN’s 4G and 5G networks to provide an alternative to conventional fibre broadband, particularly in locations where extending fibre infrastructure remains difficult or costly.
FlyX operates through an Outdoor Unit installed outside the customer’s premises to capture stronger network signals, which is then connected to an indoor unit that distributes the connection through WiFi. MTN said the arrangement is particularly useful in areas where indoor network reception is weak, allowing customers to obtain more stable and reliable connectivity without waiting for fibre infrastructure to reach their locations.
The company’s Chief Broadband Officer, Egerton Idehen, said the initiative was developed in response to the growing demand for dependable high speed internet among households, entrepreneurs and remote workers. According to him, FlyX would enable MTN to expand broadband access more quickly and provide connectivity to communities where fibre deployment has remained limited. The service is intended to support activities including remote work, streaming, online learning, gaming and business operations.
MTN said FlyX forms part of its broader strategy to deepen broadband penetration and promote digital inclusion across Nigeria. The service currently offers unlimited 30 day plans of up to 50Mbps for ₦30,000 and up to 100Mbps for ₦45,000, with the first subscription including the outdoor and indoor units, a power bank and professional installation. The company said FlyX complements its FibreX service by providing fixed broadband access in locations within suitable 5G coverage but outside its fibre footprint.
