The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has approved the 2025 Annual Report and 2026 Business Plan of the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA), a move aimed at accelerating the growth of Nigeria’s digital economy and expanding the adoption of the .ng domain name across the country.

The approval was granted during a strategic meeting at NITDA headquarters in Abuja, where the President of NiRA, Mr. Adesola Akinsanya, led members of the association’s board to present its vision and implementation roadmap for 2026 to NITDA’s Director General, Kashifu Inuwa.

Speaking after the presentation, Inuwa endorsed the proposed initiatives and directed NiRA to work closely with NITDA’s e-Governance and Digital Economy Department to ensure effective implementation, regular monitoring and seamless execution of the agreed programmes. He stressed the need for stronger collaboration to achieve the target of increasing the adoption of .ng and .gov.ng domains across government institutions and the private sector.

Highlighting the association’s performance in 2025, Akinsanya disclosed that NiRA recorded 98,285 new domain registrations, 71,470 renewals and 1,970 restorations, bringing the total number of active .ng domains to more than 241,000. He added that the association also strengthened internet security through the deployment of Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) and enhanced support for accredited registrars.

The NiRA president noted that the association would intensify awareness campaigns, deepen stakeholder engagement and target startups, technology communities and public institutions as part of efforts to make .ng the preferred digital identity for Nigerians. He also revealed plans to automate key operations, modernise internal systems and review the association’s constitution in line with global best practices.

According to Akinsanya, stronger collaboration between NiRA and NITDA will help drive wider adoption of local domains, improve digital trust and support the Federal Government’s broader objective of building a secure, inclusive and globally competitive digital economy.
