The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to officially launch Nigeria’s nationwide Digital Switchover platform on June 17, 2026, in a move expected to transform the country’s broadcasting sector and expand access to digital television services. The platform is projected to provide Nigerians with more than 100 free television channels as part of efforts to modernise broadcasting infrastructure and improve nationwide access to digital content.
Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, disclosed the development during a tour of the headquarters of Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited in Abuja. He explained that the long delayed transition from analogue to digital broadcasting is now ready for nationwide rollout after years of missed deadlines and implementation setbacks. According to him, the platform will also introduce audience measurement technology capable of tracking real time television viewership patterns for broadcasters and advertisers.
The new rollout represents a major technology development for Nigeria’s media industry, particularly in the areas of digital broadcasting, satellite communication, and audience analytics. The government said the platform would strengthen competition within the broadcasting ecosystem, improve content quality, and create fresh opportunities for advertisers, content creators, and production companies across Nigeria and sub Saharan Africa. Idris added that unlike previous attempts that relied on expensive encrypted decoders, the government has subsidised part of the infrastructure cost to make the service more accessible to the public.
Charles Ebuebu, Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission, stated that the platform was designed to reflect changing audience behaviour and modern viewing habits, especially among younger Nigerians. He revealed that six regional production studios have already been established to support local content creators nationwide. Also speaking, Jane Egerton-Idehen said NigComSat plans to launch two additional satellites to strengthen service coverage and improve operational efficiency as Nigeria pushes ahead with its digital broadcasting transition.
