The Lagos State Government has announced a sweeping reform plan to deploy artificial intelligence, data analytics, and digital systems in school monitoring and registration, as part of efforts to strengthen education quality assurance across the state. The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, disclosed this during the unveiling of a new strategic plan for the Office of Education Quality Assurance, noting that the initiative is aimed at improving governance, accountability, and learning outcomes.
A key component of the reform is the automation of private school registration, which will allow school owners to process approvals online without physically visiting government offices. Alli-Balogun explained that the move is designed to ease administrative bottlenecks and enhance efficiency, adding that the broader objective is to improve overall performance within the education system through the adoption of technology driven processes.
He further stated that the reform would reposition the quality assurance agency into a more professional and technology oriented institution, supported by stronger collaboration across government agencies and partnerships with academic institutions. The state also plans to intensify capacity building for teachers and evaluators to ensure they are equipped to operate effectively within the new digital framework.
In his remarks, the Director General of the Office of Education Quality Assurance, Sulaimon Ogunmuyiwa, said the strategic plan was developed following an internal assessment that revealed key operational gaps, including excessive reliance on manual processes and limited staffing. He noted that the reforms, which have already commenced, will digitise school registration, accreditation, and monitoring processes, strengthen data protection, and enhance oversight of over two million learners and thousands of schools across Lagos, with the ultimate goal of restoring public confidence and improving education standards.
