The Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria, IXPN, has marked 20 years of operations with renewed plans to support the next phase of Nigeria’s Internet growth. The milestone highlights the organisation’s role in strengthening local Internet interconnection and improving the efficiency of data exchange within the country.
IXPN provides an infrastructure through which Internet service providers, telecommunications companies, content providers and other networks can exchange Internet traffic locally. Local interconnection helps reduce the need for domestic traffic to travel through international routes, with potential benefits for network efficiency, latency and service delivery.
As Nigeria’s digital ecosystem expands, increasing adoption of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, video streaming and other data intensive services is creating greater demand for reliable and resilient digital infrastructure. IXPN said the changing technology environment requires continued investment in Internet exchange infrastructure, technical capacity and network resilience.
The organisation’s 20 year milestone therefore comes at a significant period in Nigeria’s digital development, as the country seeks to expand connectivity and strengthen its digital economy. Continued development of local Internet infrastructure could support businesses, technology companies and digital service providers while improving the overall capacity of Nigeria’s Internet ecosystem.
