The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, and Christian Blind Mission International Nigeria, CBM, have called for increased investment in digital skills, technology and accessible infrastructure to enable persons with disabilities to participate more fully in Nigeria’s digital economy. The call was made in Lagos during a two day Digital Citizenship Training for persons with disabilities organised by the NCC.
The NCC Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Aminu Maida, represented by the Commission’s Director of Digital Economy, Helen Obi, said digital inclusion must go beyond providing internet connectivity. He explained that persons with disabilities also require the skills and confidence to use digital platforms safely, protect personal information, identify online scams and misinformation, safeguard their digital identities and understand their rights and responsibilities online.
The training exposed participants to digital foundations, internet and digital communication, cybersecurity, data protection, assistive technologies and responsible participation in the digital environment. The NCC said technology could help remove barriers to education, employment and entrepreneurship while supporting remote work, access to information and public services. The Commission also highlighted its E Accessibility Project, which provides ICT tools and assistive technologies to institutions supporting persons with disabilities.
The initiative also forms part of wider efforts by the NCC to promote technology without barriers, including research into assistive technologies and its Technology Without Barriers Hackathon. The Commission called for stronger collaboration among government agencies, technology companies, service providers, development partners and organisations representing persons with disabilities to ensure accessibility is considered when digital products and services are designed. CBM Nigeria Country Programme Manager, Michael Idah, welcomed the initiative, stressing the importance of equal opportunities for all people in an increasingly digital society.
