The Federal Government and Winbox Consulting have called for the responsible adoption of Artificial Intelligence in Nigerian workplaces, stressing that the technology should be deployed to improve productivity and enhance workers’ capabilities rather than displace them. The call was made at the second edition of the Nigeria Workplace Culture Conference and Awards organised by Winbox Consulting in Lagos.
Speaking at the event, the Zonal Director of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, South West Zone, Mienye Badejo, who represented the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammadu Maigari Dingyadi, said concerns over possible job losses arising from AI adoption were also being discussed within government. She explained that the government was working with organisations to assure workers that AI could be used to recreate and apply their existing skills differently without necessarily resulting in job losses.
Badejo said the recently reviewed National Employment Policy had taken into account changing patterns of work and the evolving nature of employment. She added that the ministry was implementing the policy through field officers, workplace inspections and partnerships, with inspections now covering issues such as data privacy, possible abuse of technology and protection of employees and businesses. According to her, Federal Government officers had also received training on the ethical use of AI.
The Chief Executive Officer of Winbox Consulting, Dr Deji Osasona, also advocated intentional and responsible use of AI, saying organisations must promote collaboration between humans and technology. He stressed the importance of leadership and continuous learning as workplaces adapt to AI, urging organisations to develop a culture of learning, unlearning and relearning. According to him, AI itself is neither inherently good nor bad, but its impact depends largely on how people use and manage the technology.
