Amazon Web Services, AWS, is expanding its effort to move enterprise artificial intelligence from experimentation to real world deployment in Africa, with a model that places engineers directly within customer teams. The company launched its Forward Deployed Engineering, FDE, organisation in June 2026 with a $1 billion investment and an ambition to move viable AI projects from concept to production within 45 days. The approach could be particularly relevant to African businesses facing shortages of specialised talent, fragmented infrastructure, legacy systems and limited technology budgets.
AWS’s model follows a 45 minute, 45 hour and 45 day process. The first 45 minutes are used to identify a business problem worth solving, while the next 45 hours focus on assessing the data, infrastructure, security requirements and commercial viability of the proposed solution. Once the project is considered feasible, a 45 day production sprint begins. AWS says teams comprising engineers, data scientists and cloud specialists will work alongside customers to build, test and deploy AI systems rather than simply providing recommendations.
The initiative is aimed at addressing a major challenge in enterprise AI, where many projects fail to progress beyond the pilot stage because of security concerns, poor data quality, organisational resistance and difficulties integrating AI with existing systems. AWS Executive in Residence, Jonathan Allen, said during an AWS Summit media roundtable in Johannesburg that the FDE approach starts with the customer’s problem and works backwards. The company believes the major bottleneck is increasingly not access to AI models, but the engineering expertise required to connect those models to proprietary data, existing infrastructure and everyday business processes.
Although AWS has not positioned FDE as an Africa specific programme, the initiative could help African companies gain access to specialised expertise while strengthening the capabilities of their own teams. The company has already used the model with organisations including the NFL, where engineers worked alongside the organisation’s team to launch NFL Fantasy AI and NFL IQ within weeks. However, the effectiveness of the 45 day target across Africa remains to be established, given differences in connectivity, technical capacity, regulation and access to capital. For AWS, the broader bet is that putting engineers closer to businesses will help turn growing interest in AI into practical systems capable of delivering measurable business value.
