The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, and the Rural Electrification Agency, REA, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, to accelerate the deployment of sustainable digital infrastructure across Nigeria through the integration of renewable energy and telecommunications systems. The agreement was signed during the NCC REA Stakeholder Workshop in Abuja, themed “Unlocking the Energy Telecoms Nexus for Scalable Digital Infrastructure in Nigeria.”
Speaking at the event, NCC Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Aminu Maida, represented by Executive Commissioner, Technical Services, Engr Abraham Oshadami, described the partnership as a major step towards achieving inclusive digital connectivity and improved energy access. He said reliable electricity and telecommunications connectivity are interconnected foundations for economic development.
Under the partnership, the REA will provide data on existing and planned electrification projects, while the NCC will share information on Universal Service Provision Fund deployments to identify areas requiring both energy and connectivity solutions. The collaboration will also explore powering telecom infrastructure, including base stations and fibre sites, through renewable energy projects.
The agencies said the initiative will reduce infrastructure costs, improve operational efficiency and expand broadband access to underserved communities. REA noted that renewable energy mini grids provide a sustainable alternative to diesel powered telecom sites, while the partnership will create new opportunities for telecom operators and renewable energy developers.
