The Federal Government has revived Nigeria’s digital postcode project nearly two decades after it was first conceived and has begun integrating it with the National Identification Number to strengthen digital identity and improve address verification. The development follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the National Identity Management Commission and the Nigerian Postal Service in Abuja.

Director General of NIMC, Abisoye Coker Odusote, said postcode retrieval has already been integrated into the NIN platform, enabling Nigerians to verify their addresses through a single system. She added that NIPOST has also been licensed as a front end enrolment partner, allowing citizens to register for their NIN at post offices nationwide.

According to Coker Odusote, combining verified identities with verified addresses will improve access to government services, financial products, healthcare, education, logistics and electronic commerce, while strengthening Nigeria’s digital public infrastructure. She also said the newly enacted NIMC Act 2026 would enhance efforts to combat identity fraud through closer collaboration with security agencies.

NIPOST Postmaster General, Tola Odeyemi, described the initiative as a major step towards solving Nigeria’s longstanding addressing challenges. She said the project, first conceived in 2006 but now fully funded by the Federal Government, will assign every addressable building a unique GIS enabled digital postcode to improve logistics, emergency response, planning and digital inclusion across the country.
