Google has announced a major upgrade to its Gemini application with the introduction of new features designed to transform the platform from a conventional chatbot into a comprehensive Artificial Intelligence hub capable of managing users’ digital activities more proactively.

The announcement was made during the company’s annual Google I/O 2026 event on Tuesday, where Google unveiled updates including a new “Daily Brief” feature, a redesigned interface, access to its AI video model Gemini Omni and a new personal AI agent known as Gemini Spark. The move is seen as part of Google’s efforts to strengthen Gemini’s competitiveness against AI platforms such as ChatGPT and Claude.

According to Google, the Daily Brief feature is designed to serve as a personalised morning digest by pulling information from users’ inboxes, calendars and task lists before organising them into a prioritised overview with suggested next steps. The company disclosed that the feature has started rolling out to Google AI subscribers in the United States. Google also revealed that the Gemini app currently has more than 900 million monthly users across over 230 countries and supports more than 70 languages.

The company further disclosed that the Gemini application had been rebuilt with a new “Neural Expressive” design language featuring fluid animations, vibrant colours, updated typography and haptic feedback. In addition, Gemini’s responses would now appear in a more structured format with key information highlighted at the top, while supplementary content such as images and timelines would appear as users scroll through responses.

Google also introduced Gemini Spark, described as a cloud based personal AI agent capable of working continuously in the background even when a user’s device is locked. The company said Spark would enable users to create custom workflows and automate tasks, effectively transforming Gemini into a more active digital partner rather than a passive assistant. Google noted that the feature is currently in testing and is expected to become available to Google AI Ultra subscribers next week.
