The Lagos State Government has commenced its Accelerated Digital Literacy Training Certification Programme aimed at equipping public servants with critical digital skills required for a modern, technology driven public service. The initiative, launched at the Public Service Staff Development Centre, targets 1,000 officers across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, marking a structured push to align governance with the realities of a digital economy.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Establishment and Training, Olubusola Ajibola Abidakun, said the programme goes beyond basic computer literacy, focusing instead on globally recognised certifications such as IC3 and META Associate Level credentials. From a technology perspective, this signals a deliberate move toward standardised digital competence within government, where skills are benchmarked against international frameworks rather than informal training. The inclusion of certification pathways is particularly significant, as it introduces accountability and measurable outcomes into public sector capacity building.

Structured in four intensive batches running through May 2026, the training combines hands on learning with practical application, an approach experts say is essential for real digital transformation. Director of Training, Modupe Animashaun, noted that the curriculum is tailored to close existing digital gaps within the civil service, shifting focus from routine ICT usage to tools and systems that enhance productivity, data management, and service delivery. This reflects a broader understanding that digital transformation in government is less about technology acquisition and more about human capability.

The programme, delivered in partnership with Potenergy Limited, is expected to produce a network of digitally skilled officers who can act as change agents within their respective MDAs. While the initiative represents a strong step forward, its long term impact will depend on how well these skills are integrated into actual government workflows, including automation, data driven decision making, and citizen facing digital services. If effectively sustained, the programme could significantly improve efficiency, transparency, and responsiveness in Lagos State’s public administration.
