The Delta State Police Command has uncovered a disturbing case involving a 17 year old boy alleged to have hacked into celebrities’ WhatsApp accounts and sold explicit materials to fellow students. The Divisional Police Officer of Ugborikoko Division in Uvwie Local Government Area, Temi Agbede-Zuokumor, disclosed this during a security awareness programme, explaining that the case emerged following a routine check of a student’s phone.
According to the police officer, initial claims by the student’s mother that the device belonged to his sister raised suspicion, prompting further inspection. A search of the phone reportedly revealed that it belonged to the boy and contained multiple foreign contacts, including over 80 Australian numbers, alongside a large volume of explicit materials stored on the device.
Agbede-Zuokumor stated that investigations showed the teenager allegedly distributed and sold the content to classmates, who reportedly referred to him as “boss.” She added that chat records indicated active transactions, with students requesting explicit materials from him, pointing to a growing underground exchange within the school environment.
The police further disclosed that the suspect had gained unauthorised access to WhatsApp accounts of prominent individuals, which he allegedly used to solicit money from unsuspecting victims. During the session, comedian Otaghware Onodjayeke shared a related experience of being contacted by a fraudster impersonating Elon Musk, underscoring the rising trend of digital impersonation and cyber fraud targeting both public figures and ordinary users.
