Apple is preparing a major overhaul of Siri that could transform the voice assistant into a chatbot similar to ChatGPT, according to a report by Bloomberg. Sources familiar with the plans say the revamped Siri, internally known as Campos, is expected to be integrated into iOS 27 and could take centre stage at Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference in June.
The new Siri is said to support both voice and text interactions, marking a notable shift from Apple’s earlier position on conversational AI. Apple’s senior vice president, Craig Federighi, had previously downplayed the idea of turning Siri into a chatbot, arguing instead for AI features that work quietly in the background. However, growing competition from rivals and the rapid adoption of standalone AI chatbots appear to have pushed Apple toward a more direct conversational approach.
Pressure on Apple has intensified as other technology companies move quickly in the AI space. OpenAI’s reported plans to enter the hardware market, with former Apple design chief Jony Ive involved, are believed to have sharpened Apple’s sense of urgency. The prospect of AI driven devices from competitors has raised questions about Apple’s long term position in personal computing and smart assistants.
Apple has faced criticism for falling behind in the AI race, after repeatedly delaying plans for a more personalised Siri and exploring partnerships with several AI leaders. After testing technologies from OpenAI and Anthropic, the company ultimately settled on Google’s Gemini as its AI partner, a collaboration confirmed earlier this month. The expected Siri revamp signals Apple’s clearest move yet to close the gap and reassert its relevance in the fast evolving AI landscape.
