Meta Platforms has officially restructured its artificial intelligence division, creating a new body known as the Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). The move, which was first hinted at in a report by The Information last Friday, was confirmed through an internal memo seen by Bloomberg and The New York Times. The reorganization comes under the leadership of Alexandr Wang, the Scale AI founder who recently joined the company as Chief AI Officer in June.
The centerpiece of the restructuring is the establishment of a group called TBD Labs, which will be overseen directly by Wang. This unit is expected to focus primarily on advancing foundation models such as the Llama series, the most recent version of which was released in April. Alongside TBD Labs, three other divisions will concentrate on research, product integration, and infrastructure, respectively, forming the backbone of the new AI structure.
Industry watchers say the overhaul reflects Meta’s increasing urgency to keep pace with competitors like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind. These companies have made major strides in generative AI and large language models, raising pressure on Meta to accelerate its development and deployment of cutting-edge technology.
Reports also indicate that Meta Chief Executive Officer, Mark Zuckerberg, has played a hands-on role in the reshaping of the company’s AI agenda. His personal involvement in recruitment for the new group underscores the strategic importance Meta is attaching to artificial intelligence as it seeks to position itself as a frontrunner in the global AI race.
