The Australian startup, which powers millions of creators and businesses globally, confirmed it was aware of the disruption but has yet to clarify the cause. The outage began last week, with users initially encountering a notice suggesting the site had been blocked by the Indian government before it was replaced by a standard SSL protocol error. The Linktree mobile app has also remained inaccessible in the country.
India is a big market for Linktree, ranking as its fifth-largest by traffic, with an estimated 7.3 million visits in July alone, representing 3.5% of the platform’s global usage. Despite this, Linktree co-founder and CEO Alex Zaccaria said the company had not received any official communication from Indian authorities regarding the disruption. The startup also posted on X, stating it was “investigating” the matter, but offered no timeline for resolution.
Reports indicate that the outage is widespread, affecting all major networks in India rather than being limited to a specific internet service provider. The lack of clarity has left creators and businesses who rely on the service scrambling for alternatives to maintain online visibility. While the U.S. remains Linktree’s largest market with 48.5 million visits, followed by Indonesia, Brazil, and the U.K., the sudden disruption in India underscores the platform’s vulnerability in global markets where regulatory action is often opaque.
India’s IT and telecom ministries have yet to respond to queries regarding the situation, leaving uncertainty about whether the inaccessibility is the result of an official order or a technical issue. Founded in 2016, Linktree achieved unicorn status in 2022 and surpassed 50 million users in 2024. The ongoing outage raises questions about the regulatory environment for foreign digital platforms in India, even as the country continues to position itself as a key hub for global tech adoption.
