OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has unveiled a new India-only subscription plan called ChatGPT Go, priced at 399 rupees ($4.57) per month, making it the company’s most affordable offering yet. The move is aimed at expanding OpenAI’s footprint in India, its second-largest market by user base, by catering to the country’s vast but highly price-sensitive internet population of nearly one billion users.

The ChatGPT Go plan offers subscribers significant advantages over the free version, including the ability to send up to ten times more messages and generate ten times more images. It also promises faster response times, with higher-tier plans offering even greater allowances. OpenAI said the plan was designed for Indians seeking more access to ChatGPT’s advanced capabilities at a budget-friendly price.

The launch comes as OpenAI adjusts its pricing strategy to capture a broader range of users in India. Its top-tier subscription, ChatGPT Pro, costs 19,900 rupees per month, while ChatGPT Plus, the mid-range option, is priced at 1,999 rupees per month. By contrast, the new Go plan provides a cheaper entry point for individuals and small businesses who may have found the higher costs prohibitive.

Earlier this year, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman met with India’s IT minister to discuss developing a low-cost AI ecosystem, highlighting the company’s commitment to the Indian market. Altman has also suggested that India, currently second only to the United States in ChatGPT usage, could soon become the largest user base globally. The company’s latest offering is seen as a strategic step in accelerating that growth.
