Microsoft has announced a $1 million investment to train one million Nigerians in artificial intelligence (AI) skills in a move to drive digital transformation in Nigeria. The initiative, unveiled during the Microsoft AI Tour in Lagos, aligns with Nigeria’s National AI Strategy and aims to bridge the digital skills gap while fostering workforce readiness.
With Nigeria’s AI market expected to expand rapidly, the investment is poised to boost the country’s role in the global AI revolution. The Microsoft AI Tour, a global event series bringing together business leaders, technical experts, and AI enthusiasts, served as the platform for the announcement.
The training program will be delivered in collaboration with the Nigerian government, focusing on digital literacy, AI expertise, and cybersecurity. It is designed to enhance employability, equip young professionals with future-ready skills, and support the country’s economic development through technological advancement.
Ola Williams, Managing Director of Microsoft Nigeria and Ghana, highlighted AI’s transformative potential, emphasizing Microsoft’s commitment to empowering individuals and organizations. She noted that by investing in digital skills training, Microsoft aims to create a workforce capable of driving innovation and economic growth.
Special attention will be given to youth and women, ensuring inclusivity and equitable access to opportunities in the evolving digital economy.
By 2026, Microsoft plans to reach one million Nigerians, including business leaders and senior public sector executives, through its AI skilling programs. This initiative aligns with Nigeria’s national priorities of boosting economic growth, fostering industrialization, and investing in digital enterprises. Williams described the initiative as not just about individual advancement but about uplifting entire communities by democratizing AI education.
Industry projections indicate that Nigeria’s AI market will grow by 27.08% annually from 2025 to 2030, potentially contributing $15 billion to the nation’s GDP by 2030. The Microsoft AI Tour in Lagos featured expert discussions and hands-on experiences with AI technologies, demonstrating the crucial role of AI in business transformation and problem-solving. With this investment, Microsoft is reinforcing its commitment to Nigeria’s digital future and positioning the country as a key player in the global AI landscape.
