Apple has expanded its iPhone 16 lineup with the introduction of the iPhone 16e, a more affordable addition that retains key features of its high-end counterparts. Pre-orders for the device will commence on February 21, while official availability is set for February 28.
Powered by Apple’s latest A18 chip, the iPhone 16e also marks a major milestone as the first iPhone to feature Apple’s in-house C1 cellular modem, promising improved network performance, better power efficiency, and seamless integration with iOS.
The device supports Apple Intelligence, the company’s AI-powered suite designed to enhance user experience while prioritizing privacy. Among the AI features is the Clean Up tool, which allows users to remove unwanted elements from photos, and an improved Photos app with natural language search. Apple also introduced Image Playground, enabling users to create custom emojis and AI-generated visuals. Additionally, Siri has been upgraded to enhance conversational abilities and now integrates ChatGPT, allowing users to access OpenAI’s chatbot without requiring an account.
For photography enthusiasts, the iPhone 16e boasts a 48MP Fusion camera with a 2x Telephoto lens, ensuring high-resolution image capture with optical zoom-like quality. The device maintains Apple’s signature durability with an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance, and a Ceramic Shield front, claimed to be tougher than any smartphone glass. The iPhone 16e will be available in two color options—black and white—and offers storage capacities of 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB.
Apple’s Vice President of Worldwide iPhone Product Marketing, Kaiann Drance, described the iPhone 16e as a powerful yet cost-effective option within the iPhone 16 series. He emphasized its long battery life, fast performance, and innovative camera system, stating that the device is designed to bring the iPhone experience to a wider audience. Notably, the iPhone 16e includes an upgraded Action Button with Visual Intelligence, allowing users to identify objects like animals, plants, or restaurants simply by pointing the camera.
The iPhone 16e joins the broader iPhone 16 family, which includes the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. The standard models, released in September 2024, feature Super Retina XDR OLED displays in various colors, while the Pro versions offer larger screens and a premium titanium build. With the iPhone 16e, Apple aims to make its latest innovations more accessible, further strengthening its presence in the competitive smartphone market.
