Telegram has kicked off the year with a major update, enhancing the platform with a slew of new features aimed at improving security and user engagement.

One of the most notable changes is the launch of a new account verification method, which now allows third-party authorities, such as food-quality regulators or educational organizations, to verify accounts. This builds on Telegram’s existing verification program for public figures and organizations. Verified accounts will now display a unique logo, distinct from the familiar blue checkmark.

The new third-party verification system is designed to combat scams and misinformation on the platform. Telegram explained that this decentralized approach to verification would set a new safety standard for social platforms. By allowing trusted entities to vouch for accounts, Telegram aims to create a more secure environment for users, reducing the risk of fraudulent accounts posing as legitimate businesses or public figures.

To become verified through this system, individuals or organizations must first undergo a verification process and complete an application. Verified entities can use Telegram’s Bot API to assign or remove verification, giving them control over who gets the verified mark.

This feature is similar to verification systems seen on other platforms, such as X, where organizations can verify affiliated accounts, which will then display the organization’s logo on their profiles.

In addition to the verification update, Telegram has introduced a new feature that allows users to turn gifts into NFTs. These digital gifts, which can be purchased with Telegram Stars or via the Fragment site using a TON crypto wallet, can now be upgraded into NFTs with custom backgrounds and icons. Telegram users will be able to trade these NFTs on different platforms, with the company charging a fee to cover blockchain transaction costs.

The update also brings new features for messaging, including an emoji reaction tool for service messages, such as when someone joins a group. Additionally, new search filters have been added for private chats, group chats, and channels, making it easier for users to find specific messages. Telegram’s integration of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology for creator monetization and payments continues to expand, cementing its position as one of the most innovative messaging platforms in the market.
