WP Engine, a prominent web hosting provider, has launched a lawsuit against Automattic and WordPress co-founder Matt Mullenweg, accusing them of extortion and misuse of power.

This legal action arises from a protracted dispute over trademark issues and the management of the open-source WordPress project.

In its filing, WP Engine alleges that Mullenweg and Automattic have breached their commitments to maintain an open-source environment, thereby restricting developers’ rights to innovate and modify the software. The company expressed concerns that Mullenweg’s recent conduct has revealed significant governance problems that could undermine trust within the WordPress community.

The lawsuit, filed in California, contends that Mullenweg has a history of misrepresenting his control over the WordPress Foundation and WordPress.org.

Tensions escalated when Mullenweg publicly denounced WP Engine, referring to it as the “Cancer of WordPress” and criticized its private equity partner, Silver Lake, for not valuing the open-source community.

In retaliation, WP Engine sent a cease-and-desist letter demanding Mullenweg retract his statements, which prompted Automattic to issue its own cease-and-desist regarding alleged trademark infringements. Mullenweg also restricted WP Engine’s access to WordPress.org resources but briefly lifted the ban before reinstating it.

Moreover, Automattic proposed a contentious seven-year agreement that would require WP Engine to pay 8% of its gross revenues for using the WordPress and WooCommerce trademarks or contribute resources to the project. WP Engine rejected these terms, which included limitations on developing plugins and extensions based on Automattic’s work.
