Google has unveiled significant advancements in its artificial intelligence efforts during the 10th annual “Google for India” event. This initiative reflects the growing competition among U.S. tech giants as they aim to strengthen their presence in one of the world’s largest digital markets.
The company introduced its AI model, Gemini, designed to enhance key features such as search, visual recognition, and language processing. This is particularly relevant for India, where over 40% of users interact through voice commands. Google plans to launch Gemini Live, an AI assistant that facilitates natural conversations in Hindi, with support for eight additional languages including Bengali and Tamil.
Furthermore, Google intends to expand its generative AI tool, AI Overviews, to include more Indian languages, though early reviews of its Hindi version have been mixed.
Recognizing the popularity of Google Lens in India, the company is also exploring video-based search functionalities to allow users to ask complex questions about moving objects.
Despite India’s current lag in the generative AI landscape, it remains a massive open market. Google has built a user base of 700 to 800 million over the past two decades, providing a substantial opportunity for AI adoption.
In addition, Google is enhancing Google Maps with AI-generated summaries and targeted search capabilities, analyzing reviews and images to transform the platform into a discovery tool for local businesses and attractions.
The company is also rolling out new AI tools for Indian merchants, including automated systems to convert restaurant menus into formatted online listings and features that allow businesses to create engaging online profiles using AI-generated video content.
In support of AI development in India, Google proposed frameworks aimed at unlocking approximately $4 trillion in economic value by 2030. This initiative emphasizes the need for investment in computing resources, open datasets, and skills training while advocating for equitable access to AI technologies.
Google’s ambitious plans position India as a potential leader in AI, leveraging its tech talent and dynamic startup ecosystem.
