The National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) of Nigeria has teamed up with Proforce, a private security firm, to develop four new satellites: NigeriaSAT 3, 4, 5, and a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite.
This collaboration, announced by NASRDA’s Director-General Matthew Adepoju, aims to bolster national security, agriculture, and technological advancement while creating job opportunities in the aerospace sector.
Adepoju emphasized that these satellites will enhance precision agriculture, monitoring, and data collection, thereby improving food production and security. Additionally, they are expected to support defense, maritime, and oil and gas industries. He highlighted that successful implementation of this project will elevate Nigeria’s position in the global aerospace industry.
Proforce’s Group Managing Director, Ade Ogundeyin, expressed optimism that this initiative will advance satellite technology in Nigeria and align with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
This development follows recent efforts by Nigeria to strengthen its space sector, including plans by Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) to replace its existing satellites and other ambitious projects. In March 2024, NASRDA postponed plans to launch a satellite from Nigeria in 2025 due to financial constraints.
Despite these challenges, the current partnership signals a significant step forward for Nigeria’s space capabilities.
