Uber Technologies Inc. (UBER.N) and Chinese automaker BYD Co., Ltd. (002594.SZ) have announced a multi-year partnership aimed at revolutionizing the ride-hailing industry. This alliance, unveiled on Wednesday, seeks to deploy 100,000 new electric vehicles (EVs) on Uber’s global platform.
The initial phase of this collaboration will kick off in Europe and Latin America, with plans to extend to the Middle East, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand as it promises to offer Uber drivers accessible pricing and financing options for BYD’s EVs, thereby facilitating a smoother transition to electric mobility.
Uber’s shares experienced a notable increase, rising by approximately 2.5% in premarket trading following the announcement. The adoption of EVs has faced hurdles such as high upfront costs and increased borrowing rates, which have slowed the anticipated growth in demand. However, the urgency to address climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions has intensified the global push towards electrification in the transportation sector.
To support drivers in this transition, Uber and BYD will provide various incentives, including discounts on vehicle maintenance, charging, financing, and leasing, tailored to specific markets. “When an Uber driver makes the switch to an EV, they can deliver up to four times the emissions benefits compared to a regular motorist, simply because they are on the road more,” stated Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi.

In addition to promoting EV usage, the companies plan to integrate BYD’s vehicles with self-driving technologies on Uber’s platform, potentially setting the stage for a more autonomous future in ride-hailing.
This partnership comes as BYD continues to challenge Tesla Inc. (TSLA.O) in the global EV market. Although BYD surpassed Tesla last year to become the world’s largest electric vehicle maker, Tesla has since regained the top spot. Tesla, in response to the competitive pressure, is preparing to unveil its robotaxi product in October, following a decline in its EV sales during the first two quarters of the year.
Uber, determined to lead the charge towards sustainable transportation, announced earlier this year its collaboration with Tesla to promote EV usage among its drivers in the U.S. The ride-hailing giant has set an ambitious goal to achieve zero emissions in U.S. and Canadian cities by 2030.
